- Felonies
- Felonies are more serious charges and are filed at the state level. If you have been charged with a felony, you are looking at harsher punishments than for a misdemeanor.
- Misdemeanors
- Misdemeanors are less serious than felonies but take caution, misdemeanors can sometimes carry some harsh consequences.
- City Charges
- Municipal charges are filed by the various municipalities. Oklahoma City, Midwest City, Moore, Norman, Del City and most other larger cities have their own courts. Many defendants act pro se in city cases because they think they can avoid having to pay an attorney, but be careful, city cases can be more than they bargain for especially for cases like DUI's and Domestic Violence cases.

- Public Intox
- Party goers, college students and passengers in vehicles that have been stopped for DUI are often cited for this violation. The statute that defines "public intoxication" is so vague, there are hard cases to defend, but they can be won.
- Assault & Battery
- A&B can be a misdemeanor or a felony under some circumstances. The use of a dangerous or deadly weapons can lead to more serious charges.
- Kidnapping
- Is a felony and doesn't only apply to child victims.
- Domestic Abuse
- Is a misdemeanor but can be enhanced to a felony based on a prior conviction and when the domestic violence involved strangulation or serious bodily harm.
- Bogus Checks
- Bogus check cases often are more about restitution than jail time. Most cases like these are resolved by just making restitution to the victim(s).
- Embezzlement
- Embezzlement usually involves stealing from one's employer. These cases get more complex the longer the time of embezzling and the amount of money embezzled.
- Larceny
- Shoplifting cases are very common and if they occur in Oklahoma City, they will usually be filed in the city.
- Manslaughter
- Is charged in cases where a life is lost but the defendant did not intent to cause the death.
- Murder Cases
- Murder cases are the most serious cases and as often as the death penalty is imposed in Oklahoma, these cases require extraordinary skill. Only the most qualified attorneys should take these cases.
- Child Abuse
- Child abuse cases are particularly unpopular crimes. Sex crimes against children subject the defendant to harsh sentences, reporting under the Sex Offender Registration Act and a pretty uncomfortable life in prison (if that's what must happen). These cases require great skill.
- Deprived Cases
- Cases where the state, through DHS, is trying to remove a parent's children from their home. If these cases are not handled well, the parents could end up losing their children.
- Victim Protective Order cases
- Is someone has filed a VPO against you, you need an attorney to prepare an adequate defense. Having a VPO against you can limit employment activities.
- Forgery
- These crimes will often deal with restitution.
- Solicitation of Prostitution
- These are sometimes embarrassing cases for the client that are generally not the types of cases where jail time is a possibility.
- Car Theft
- Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and larceny of a motor vehicle are different crimes with the latter being the more serious.
- Burglary
- Burglary cases are serious and need to be handled by the most qualified attorneys. Prison time is a real possibility in some of these cases.
- Breaking & Entering
- B&E is a lesser to Burglary and if you can get a Burglary case reduced to Breaking & Entering, that's a good start.
- Truancy
- Parents can be charged with the truancy of their minor child(run). Most cases can be resolved by securing the minor child's attendance at school.
- Gun Charges
- Gun charges can be misdemeanors, but the charge most people fear is the felon in possession of a firearm. It carries up to ten years and prosecutors really push for time on these cases.
- Drug Cases
- Are too numerous to name but 4 big categories are below.
- Cultivation
- Growing marijuana or manufacturing another drug is generally a felony offense can, depending on quantity, can be a big deal.
- Possession
- Simple possession of marijuana is a misdemeanor. Possession of some other drugs constitutes a felony and are more serious charges.
- Possession With Intent
- Is a felony in all cases and will include much stiffer punishments than simple possession.
- Trafficking
- Trafficking carries prison time and the offender is not eligible for deferred or suspended sentencing. Trafficking cases get to trial with frequency because of the harsh punishments imposed. Many prosecutors will amend down to Possession with Intent to work out a good plea bargain.
